Overview

top of page

The order in which to calculate an equation can be confusing when the equation is complex.

General Rules

top of page

An expression should be read from left to right and calculations should be performed in the following order;

  1. Brackets
  2. Powers (Exponential)
  3. Division
  4. Multiplication
  5. Addition
  6. Subtraction

When an expression contains brackets the results of the bracketed expressions should be performed first, starting at the innermost brackets until no bracketed expressions remain.

Examples

Order of operations

4 + 6 * 5

  1. 4 + 6 * 5 = 4 + (6 * 5) = 4 + (30)
  2. 4 + 30 = 34

(4 + 6) * 5

  1. (4 + 6) * 5 = (10) * 5
  2. 10 * 5 = 50

6 * 5 + 42

  1. 6 * 5 + 42 = 6 * 5 +(42) = 6 * 5 + (16)
  2. 6 * 5 + 16 = (6 * 5) + 16 = (30) + 16
  3. 30 + 16 = 46
