The calculator below can be used to calculate the capacitance for up to six capacitors in either series or parallel configuration. Enter the capacitance values starting at "Capacitor #1", and leave a zero "0" in each of the capacitor controls not required.

Note! The calculator starts at the top control and works down the list until a zero value is encountered, then performs the calculation. If you enter values in the first, second, and fourth controls, (skipping the third control), the value in the fourth control will not be included in the calculation.

Capacitors in Parallel
The total capacitance is equal to the sum of all of the capacitors.
CTotal = C1 + C2 + C3 + Cn...

Capacitors in Series:
The total capacitance is equal to the reciprocal of the sums of the reciprocals of all of the capacitors.
CTotal = 1 / (1 / C1 + 1 / C2 + 1 / C3 + 1 / Cn...)

The base unit of capacitance is the farad (F) (capacitance values are more commonly given in microfarads (1/1 000 000 farad), or picofarads (1/1 000 000 000 000 farad), as a 1 farad capacitor is much larger than is ever typically required).
